What ADAS actually is
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — features like lane-keep assist, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Many rely on a camera mounted right behind the windshield.
Why replacement changes the geometry
The camera's aim is calibrated relative to the glass. When we replace the windshield, even tiny differences in mount angle can throw the camera's aim off. Recalibration reestablishes the correct 'zero' so the system reads the road accurately.
Two main calibration types
- Static calibration: Uses precisely-positioned targets in a controlled shop environment. Common for many models.
- Dynamic calibration: A road-drive with a scan tool at specific speeds and conditions. Common for other models.
- Some vehicles require both.
What happens if you skip it
The camera may still 'work' — but it might report objects incorrectly, mis-align lane markings, or produce false collision warnings. Driver-assist features are safety-critical; they should function to manufacturer specification.
